Suicide Prevention

*disclaimer: This post may be triggering to some as it details my struggles with depression and thoughts of suicide. This post is meant help not harm. If you or someone you know may be suicidal or in danger of harming themselves CALL the National Suicide Lifeline: Call 1-800-273-8255

“I don’t want to be here anymore.” Those were the words that fell from my lips over and over and over again. I had reached my breaking point. I just felt out of control and surrounded by darkness all around.

Passive thoughts of suicide would fill my brain leading up to my breaking point. How simple would it be just to drive in front of that oncoming truck or into a tree. These thoughts were so dark yet they were becoming so prevalent in my thought patterns. I felt as though I didn’t matter. It was becoming overwhelmingly hard to see the light. I felt alone. I was so good at hiding my pain.

According to the World Health Organization, ” Close to 800 000 people die by suicide every year. Furthermore, for each suicide, there are more than 20 suicide attempts.”

What you need to remember is that you are not alone. There are people who love and care about you all around. It is ok to share what you are going through. There is no shame in having the feelings that you are having. Asking for help is important and even if it is hard, asking for help is better than hiding.

October 10th is World Mental Health Day and this year the focus is on “Working together to prevent suicide.” There is a call to action to take “40 seconds of action” which means taking that small amount of time to show that you care.

Why 40 seconds? Did you know that someone dies by suicide every 40 seconds?

It’s time to talk about #mentalhealthawareness! #endthestigma #40secondsofaction

What are some ways you can take “40 seconds of action?”

  • Although it may be hard, take this time to share your feelings of struggle with someone that you trust.
  • Reach out to someone who you are worried about. Let them know that you care. Open up the lines of communication and let them know that they can talk about whatever they want.
  • Use your writing to share the 40 second statistic and to share suicide prevention actions that you can take.
  • Initiate a discussion about mental health with friends and co-workers. You never know who is struggling and a simple discussion may open up an avenue for someone to reach out for help.
  • Reach out to your doctor or mental health professional if you are struggling. It is ok to ask for help.

Thankfully I was able to get the help that I needed. As I crashed in a downward spiral my then husband took me to the Emergency room where I was evaluated and then taken to the mental health ward where I was given the support that I needed. I could not hide any longer in the darkness.

If you or someone you know is struggling to see the light, CALL the National Suicide Lifeline: Call 1-800-273-8255

Thank you for taking the time to listen today. Please share this post with a friend and take 40 seconds of action.
